The man

Abraham-Louis Breguet was born in Neuchâtel Switzerland in1747.
He opened his first workshop in 1775, Quai de l'Horloge in Paris.
Rapidly in 1780 he brought a revolution in the watchmaking world by inventing the automatic watch.

A succession of invention

Breguet was involved in a several inventions one by one :
  • A perpetual repeater with date for the Queen Marie-Antoinette in 1782,
  • The spring tone in 1783,
  • The Breguet key in 1786,
  • in 1786 the natural escapement without oil in 1786
  • and bumper system to protect the watch against the fall in 1790.
In 1783 he was honoured as the watchmaking master.

A innovations still up to date

Breguet is still at the origin of several mechanical system and patents as well :´
  • In 1795, he invented the perpetual calendar,
  • The same day, he created the Breguet spring and the Ruby cylinder,
  • In 1798, the patent of the escapement constant strength,
  • In 1801, the development of the tourbillon regulator,
  • in 1810, the first wrist watch of the history! He made for Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples and sister of the Emperor Napoléon 1st.

The honours

Abraham-Louis Breguet became a member of the longitude office in 1814 then the official watchmaker of the Royal Navy in 1815. The same year, he introduced the Marine Chronometer.
Then he entered the Science Academy while receiving the famous award of the legion of honour by the king Louis XVIII. He died in 1823.

The company

The new company Breguet Nephew & Company

In 1833, Louis-Clément Breguet, son of Antoine-Louis, took over the new Breguet Company, that was bought afterwards by Edward Brown in 1870.

The Chaumet episode

In 1970, the brothers Jacques and Pierre Chaumet bought the brand Breguet. They opened a new workshop in Le Brassus in Switzerland in 1976. Then the brand is again bought by the Investors Corporation Group in 1987, a new factory is built in L'Abbaye.

The SWATCH Group integration

Finally the famous watchmaker SWATCH Group decided to buy the brand Breguet in 1999 further to a long period of growth.
The SWATCH strategy is to have a rich portfolio of luxury premium that have a huge industrial assets (Factory, equipment and qualified people) and marketing power in order to increase and to get markets shares from the following competitors : Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and others.
